Hawks' Football - 2013 Season Preview

   The 2013 Hawks enter this season looking to defend their three consecutive Superbowl titles and to make it four straight, something that has never been accomplished in Rhode Island high school football history. The season kicked off this past Friday at home against St. Rays, with the Hawks convincingly putting away the Saints, 32-8.
   The green and gold  are the early season favorites, since most of last year's key players return: quarterback Pat Gill, receivers Mike Scarcella and Lee Moses, in addition to running backs Power Kanga and last year's Superbowl MVP, Remington Blue. In the early-season coaches' poll that was revealed last week, the Hawks were ranked first, followed by Cranston East and archrival LaSalle.  That key matchup between the Hawks and the Rams will take place November 17th, at 7pm at Lasalle. Can our guys successfully defend their three belts to make it four straight? Only time will tell, but things are certainly looking bright for the Hawks.

Adaptive Moto X at the LA X Games 2013

X Games LA 2013

Adaptive Action Sports, X Games Sport Organizers/Founders of Adaptive Moto X, partnered with the ESPN and EPCN Productions this year to bring the world’s top seven adaptive moto riders to compete for gold in LA at X Games 2013. 

Staples Center was filled to the brim.  In the pits leading up to the race, tension was thick and nerves tight as the riders prepared to race. During three practice rounds, it was hard to determine how the race would play out.   Off of his second place finish at the Extremity Games, newcomer Max Gomez was looking fast.  Event veterans Chris Ridgway, X Games gold medalist, and Todd Thompson both rode strong and were poised to give Mike Shultz, favored to win, a run for his money.  Unfortunately, Jim Wazny, a single above knee amputee and veteran to X Games Moto and Snocross, lost his front brake coming off the 65 foot ramp jump resulting in a crash that took him out of the main event.

The Adaptive Moto X was the first race of the evening. Six riders lined up to start: Chris Ridgway (single bk amputee), Mike Shultz (single ak amputee), Todd Thompson (single bk amputee), Max Gomez (single bk amputee), Steve Howe (single right arm amputee) and Dave Turner (single bk amputee).

Engines fired, lights and music came up and the announcer called “Are you ready,  Staples Center….!!?” The crowd erupted just as the gates dropped and the racers cut loose. Ridgway and Shultz broke the fastest but it was Ridgway who took the hole shot with Shultz and Thompson just on his wheel.

Ridgway led the race for the first four of a 12 lap race before being overtaken by Shultz in a dramatic pass. Thompson would also pass Ridgway for second place but not before Ridgway defended his line with fierce conviction. Shultz, Thompson and Ridgway led the race in that order and crossed the line the same way.  Max Gomez raced a strong race and finished fourth followed by Howe. Turner had a brake cable malfunction mid-race that kept him from the checkered flag.

The race was a phenomenal success and a truly amazing show. We are looking forward to X Games Austin in 2014 for another year of amazing adaptive racing.

"College Hoops 101"...with Cam and....Stone & Z?

 

Okay, the combinations of The Network's sports talk programming has become a bit confusing of late, but just so that our thousands of rabid fans are kept in the loop, we'll eventually get ourselves back to our standard shows. Suffice it to say, this week's edition of Hawk Spawts Tawk centered around the first day of bracketology - the guys break down all the regions, give us their picks, update current scores, and showcase their incredible feel for the pulse of NCAA basketball - all in the right-hand column of The Network, underUstream. Hawks' Hockey Season-Ending Wrap-Up

Last weekend the first seeded 17-5 (12-2 league) Hendricken  Hawks took on the 13-9 (9-8 league) La Salle Academy Rams in the RIIL’s Varsity Hockey semifinal. The games were played on Friday and Saturday Night (March 8^th, and 9^th) at Thayer Arena and the West Warwick Civic Center, respectively.

As the puck dropped and playoffs began, it was clear that LaSalle wanted to come out of the gates fast and send an early message to the Hawks, which is exactly what they did. In Game 1 Friday night, the Rams’ Delisle came down the ice from the center dot and shot one home just 19 seconds into the game. That goal  sure woke up the green and gold. The rest of the game was somewhat evenly matched and hard fought with many battles for the puck, big hits, and great shots. The game was a goalies’ battle, as Proulx went toe-to-toe with Tyler Walsh of La Salle.  The shot total for the Hawks  doesn’t tell the true story of the game, however, as the Hawks only had 9 shots on net. The Rams added an empty net tally to seal the deal in their 2-0, Game 1 victory.

Game 2 on Saturday night was much worse, with the Hawks losing to the Rams by a startling score of 6-2. The only highlights of the game for the Hawks were the goals scored by Markowski from Creamer and Kim in the first, and the powerplay goal by Fera from Markowski and Kim. The Hawks had plenty of shots, with 27, but just ran into a hot goalie who wasn’t giving up any rebounds and never really faced a serious challenge.  The Hawks just couldn’t establish any offensive momentum and  just seemed as though they were resigned to their fate after their long season of play. Goaltender Mitch Proulx was responsible for giving up 5 of the 6 Rams’ goals (the lone other tally being an empty net).

It’s unfortunate that such a talented team could have such a great season and then have their worst weekend at the most inopportune time.  LaSalle deserved to win the series, and if I were a betting man, I’d bet that even our guys would admit as much. Nonetheless, the ‘Boys of Winter’ had a great season athat just happened to be cut short. They defeated nearly every team that they played and ,overall,  played like champions. They won their division and often overcame difficulties to win games and showed that they were truly a talented and determined team .   Next year the Hawks will be back with everyone except Captain Eddie Markowski, Dakota Hersey, and goaltenders Mitchel Proulx and Craig Colson,  so the Hawks will be in great shape for another run at the cup next season.

Rollin' Without Stone....

Over in the Ustream section of The Network is the latest edition of sports talk, from today, Wednesday, March 13th.  In the absence of the venerable Stone Freeman, the erstwhile Cam Brennan stepped in today, bringing together for the first time a hybrid edition of "The Stone & Z Show" and "College Hoops 101".  The topics that were tossed around  in the free-flowing discussion ranged from the NBA, NHL, and the recent NFL signings to college hoops and the quickly approaching Big Dance.  Tune in and get a feel for what the talking heads at The Network are thinking about all the hot issues in the world of sports.

Indoor Track at The 2013 New Balance Nationals

A previous post here at The Network indicated that our indoor track season had come to a fantastic finish - no pun intended - amidst Class A and state titles, in addition to a new school record in the 4 X 200 relay at the New Englands.

Alas, it seems we jumped the gun - once again, no pun intended.

This past weekend, our runners competed at The Armory in New York in the New Balance nationals, where they ran in two races. While our guys didn't take home any hardware, they did put in a very respectable showing.
