As of right now, it would seem that our outdoor track & field athletes are pretty much on cruise control and priming themselves for the quickly approaching state meets in a few weeks.
Last weekend, Coaches Brennan and Lourenco had their guys in the Schomp Invitational, at which the team placed a respectable fourth but managed to put up some pretty impressive performances. Coach Brennan pointed to Shane Olson's 3rd place finish in the javelin, John Celona's 6th place in the hammer, and Alex Cerbo's continuing dominance in the shot put, in which he finished first. As the event unfolded, however, Coach Lourenco was quick to update people in the Hendricken sports community by highlighting some of the results on Twitter -

On Monday, our outdoor athletes took on Pilgrim and Mount Pleasant in their final dual meet of the spring season. The Hawks finished their dual meet schedule unblemished by knocking off both squads, 146-8 and 124-30, respectively.
Leaps and bounds were the primary storylines from the meet, the most important of which was Justin Mazzulla's performance in the triple jump -
Highlight of the meet came from freshmen justin mazzula with a 39'11 3/4" leap in the triple jump.

One last word on mazzula's jump. He would have scored 9th in last years state meet with his jump from today, only 1'4" away from scoring.

In addition to JMazz's phenomenal day, the Hawks were also bolstered in the pole vault by Nick Celico and Nick Kelling (each of whom went for 10'6"), Ben Murphy in the high jump (6'2"), and Lee Moses (20' 8 3/4") and Nick Stravato (18' 8 1/4") in the long jump. On the oval, Colin Tierney continued on with his usual outstanding and consistent numbers by finishing first in the 800 meter run with a time of 202.6, while junior Tom Grizzetti also took the top spot in the 3000 with a time of 9:37.4.
Another outstanding weekend for the Hawks, bringing them one stride closer to another state title.
